Child Marriage: Fact Sheets and Statistics

Child marriage is not exclusive to any one religion, culture, or geographic location. It happens in the East and the West; some girls are as young as 5 years old on their wedding day. Understanding the consequences of this practice -an increase in domestic violence and sexual assault, poorly educated women, psychological abuse, death in childbirth, depression, HIV/AIDS, and murder- will better enable people around the world to speak up for the girls who cannot speak for themselves.
