Promoting the idea that acquaintance rape is not really assault, that good guys and bad guys commit rape, or that sometimes rape is just an accident, has led to a culture which shifts the blame from the rapist to their victim. We need to condemn the act of violence, not the person who has been attacked. Rape is rape. A lack of verbal consent is rape. Having any sort of sexual contact with someone while they are drunk or unconscious is rape. What ought to be a black and white issue – what is rape and what is not – has become grey and clouded over by people who believe myths about rape.
