When we hear of a child of primary school age being sexually assaulted, we typically assume that the perpetrator was an adult. While this is generally the case, police investigators and rape crisis intervention personnel are dealing with a new, disturbing category of rapists: school children.

Even in presumably safe, conservative towns, rape victim advocates encounter young children who have been sexually assaulted by a peer. Rape is happening on playgrounds and in school buildings.

It may seem unthinkable that a child of 10 or 11 could perform premeditated rape against one of their peers. In decades past, this would have been extremely rare, almost unheard of, in most parts of the world. However, children today have easy access to explicitly

sexual material through internet media. The average age that a child will first view hard pornography is 11. By the time they’ve reached the upper grades, many children are recording and photographing their own pornographic material and texting it to all of their friends.

Children tend to emulate the things they observe. Little girls will care for their dolls like they’ve seen their mothers care for younger siblings. Little boys will gather their tools of plastic and wood to “help” their fathers repair a broken piece of furniture. It’s natural; it’s part of how children learn and develop. The danger comes when their notions of sexuality come from porn. The danger comes when their porn prompted sex-education comes before they’ve even reached puberty.

I’ve seen the faces of frightened, confused little girls who have been assaulted by boys not much older than themselves. Girls who should be home coloring pictures for their mums to hang on the fridge are undergoing examinations and interviews which traumatize adults. It’s a terrible, heartbreaking thing to see. Frankly, it’s infuriating. Girls who have barely begun to understand their own bodies are being violated and abused by boys who cannot comprehend the life-altering effects which their porn reenactments will bring.

I firmly believe that these teen and pre-teen boys are responsible for their own actions. However, I also believe that the adults who promote and invest in the porn industry are just as much in the wrong. Pornography is a vile and degrading thing in and of itself but when it infests the minds of young children it becomes an even more horrific monster. It becomes the tool which promotes a rape culture in which a generation learns to objectify and abuse one other before they have reached the ninth grade.
