Some of you may have flinched a bit at the title of this post but understand this: well over 90% of the world’s “prostitutes” are being sold for sex against their will. It’s estimated that at least 9 for every 10 girls and women working as prostitutes are forced to do so. In other words, they’re being trafficked. They are slaves. Most of them have been enslaved since childhood.
Prostitutes tend to provide comedic entertainment on screen – “the happy hooker” – but that’s not the true nature of sexual slavery. Prostituted people are people, typically children, being threatened, violated, raped, and abused daily. They are not the spunky, sassy, self-assured, in-control business women you see in film and television. Their lives won’t make a comedy sitcom or late night talk show because real prostitution is not sexy and hilarious, filled with glamorous women wearing pink boas and making their own choices about when to sleep with whom.
It is forced. It is degrading. It is a violation of human dignity.
